Megantic Sky

Live view from the Mégantic area

—

Megantic Sky is a real-time view of the sky over the Mégantic area, from a camera at Chalet Zenderfull in Val-Racine, inside the Mont-Mégantic Dark Sky Reserve. During the night, the image updates by itself each time the camera takes a new photo. For now, the camera does not run during the day, but we may add daytime coverage in the future. The project is run by Zenderfull with the support of the Montréal Planetarium, and it is funded entirely by Zenderfull — if you enjoy it, a donation helps keep it running.

Why is the image round?

Picture yourself lying on your back in a clearing, taking in the whole sky at once. That’s what our all-sky camera sees: its fisheye lens covers a full 180°, from one horizon to the other, so the entire sky fits in a single circle. The point straight overhead is at the centre, and the edge of the circle is the horizon all the way around — which is why you’ll often spot treetops and rooftops along the rim.
